Inspect and Prepare
Assess the base material, existing coating and surface condition. Remove grease, corrosion and unsuitable old finishes as required, then clean and activate the surface ready for plating.

Black zinc plating in Melbourne
Tell us which parts need plating, their material and quantity. Include approximate dimensions, photos of their condition and any finish specifications. If you need to match existing hardware, mention this in your enquiry.

Building the coating beneath the colour
Black zinc plating starts with a prepared metal surface, followed by zinc deposition and the treatment that develops the black finish. Additional finishing stages depend on the coating system and the requirements of the job.
Assess the base material, existing coating and surface condition. Remove grease, corrosion and unsuitable old finishes as required, then clean and activate the surface ready for plating.
Apply an electrical current to deposit zinc onto the prepared components. The plating method and coating requirements are selected with the part’s shape, dimensions and intended use in mind.
Treat the zinc-plated surface with the specified black passivation or conversion treatment. This develops the dark appearance and contributes to the corrosion resistance of the finished coating system.
Carry out the required rinsing, any specified sealing or topcoat, and drying. Inspect the appearance and coverage against the agreed requirements before the parts are ready for collection or dispatch.

We believe in honest communication. That's why we're upfront about lead times and keep you informed throughout the process, so you always know what to expect

Every completed job undergoes a thorough final quality inspection before it is shipped or collected. If it doesn't meet our high standards, it doesn't leave our workshop.

Every job gets the same attention to detail - whether it's a single motorcycle part or a 200-piece industrial run.
Got questions before you commit? Good. Here are the ones we get asked most often.
No. Black zinc plating adds a zinc layer before the black conversion treatment, while black oxide forms a different type of surface coating. Their protective properties and finishing requirements differ. If your drawing or original component specifies one of these treatments, provide those details so we can assess the correct finish.
The appearance can vary with the surface condition and coating process. Do not assume it will look identical to matt black paint or powder coating. Send a reference sample or photos and tell us whether colour consistency, gloss level or visible surfaces are priorities.
Suitability depends on the coating specification and exposure conditions. Moisture, salt, chemicals and abrasion can affect how long the finish protects the component. Tell us where the parts will be used so we can discuss whether black zinc is appropriate for the application.
Refinishing may be possible after assessing the material and existing coating. Old finishes may need removal before cleaning and replating. Deep pitting, corrosion damage and surface marks can remain visible, so the achievable appearance depends on the condition of the underlying metal.
Plating adds thickness, which can affect threads, holes and mating surfaces. Include drawings, critical tolerances and any areas that must remain untreated with your enquiry. For high-strength fasteners, also provide the material grade and required finish specification so we can assess the processing requirements.
